Though he's well known for leading his Large Ensemble, we will have the intimate Vinny Golia experience--in some ways a large ensemble on his own. (In a piece we randomly chose, he plays : Eb, A, & Bass Clarinets, Sopranino, Soprano & Bass Saxophones, Piccolo, Bass & Latvian Clay Flutes) Saxophone.com says: "Golia is like the person who speaks 5 different languages fluently and at the same time can read and write artful prose in each language." Vinny will play, discuss, and take questions about a number of his solo works.
Vinny Golia is a composer who fuses the rich heritage of Jazz,
contemporary classical and world music into his own unique compositions.
As a bandleader, Golia has presented his music to international concert
audiences in ensembles varying dramatically in size and
instrumentation. Vinny has been a featured performer with Anthony
Braxton, Leo Smith, Horace Tapscott, John Zorn, George Lewis, Barre
Phillips, The Rova Saxophone Quartet, Patti Smith, Harry "the Hipster"
Gibson, Eugene Chadburne, John Bergamo, George Gruntz Concert Jazz
Band, Lydia Lunch, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra amongst
many others. A multi-woodwind performer, Vinny's recordings have been
consistently picked by critics and readers of music journals for their
yearly "ten best" lists. He currently teaches at the California
Institute of the Arts.
